Whoopi Goldberg reveals the hate she got for her 1993 Oscars look stopped her from dressing up for many years: ‘It hurt my feelings I’m not going to lie’

More than 30 years after landing on ‘every worst-dressed list’ for a green-and-purple look at the 1993 Oscars, Whoopi Goldberg still has no regrets.

She wore a light green brocade jumpsuit, with a unique purple bolero jacke and a matching purple skirt with a lime green lining.

The actress’ purple and lime green chandelier earrings completed the look, which is now even considered by many to be one of the ‘worst’ Oscar looks of all time.

Goldberg – who recently opened up about retiring – received the American Icon award at the Fashion Group International Night of Stars gala in New York City on Tuesday, where she opened up about the look.

She even admitted that the criticism even prevented her from dressing up for many years that followed.

‘Everyone hated the look. It hurt my feelings, I’m not going to lie. It hurt my feelings,’ she admitted.

‘It kept me from dressing up for a very long time. You have to remember, in those days, they would say things and you’d think, “Do I really look that ridiculous?”‘ she said.

Goldberg admitted that it was her love of I Love Lucy and Lucille Ball that inspired her to take a risk on that outfit.

‘Lucy would always come out in these great ensembles. And I thought, I would like to wear that! And green is not a color I would normally wear; let me try it!’ she said.

When asked if she still stood by the bold fashion choice, Goldberg emphatically said, ‘Absolutely.’

Goldberg has since transformed herself into a fashion icon, who is now a front-row staple at New York Fashion Week, and she even launched her own fashion line Dubugee in 2019.

She also opened up to The Sun at the Night of the Stars gala, when asked about speculation she was going to retire from The View.

‘I’ve done nothing but retire. I’ve been retired my whole career. So, I kind of like that,’ Goldberg joked.

I have a contract. As long as I’m doing the contract, nobody’s mad. But I’ve been off on Fridays for years now because when we did that normally, I’d go to work and do shows or do whatever because I could travel on a Friday.’

She is said to be paid $8 million annually for the four day per week co-hosting gig.
