Why footy controversy magnet Sam Newman could be barred from the MCG for as long as TWO YEARS

  • But he has admitted he is unbothered by it

Sam Newman could face a two-year ban from the MCG after a friend of his son’s was reportedly turned away from the ground on Grand Final day.

The footy legend, who has been a member of the Melbourne Cricket Club for more than 50 years, torched the Swans earlier in the week after they suffered a 60-point drubbing against the Brisbane Lions in Saturday’s Grand Final.

It means Sydney’s 12 year wait to end their premiership drought will go on for another year, with Newman branding John Longmire’s side as a ‘disgrace’.

But it appears Newman could be barred from next years Grand Final after he revealed on his podcast that he had ‘transferred a ticket’ to an acquaintance of his son’s.

Reports from the Herald Sun claim that the former Geelong captain has not yet been contacted by the MCC on the matter.

However it is understood that the family acquaintance had attended the Grand Final on his own and had been refused access by stewards at the gates because he was not Newman.

Speaking on the You Cannot be Serious Podcast, the 78-year-old stated that he was unbothered by the potential suspension.

‘I couldn’t care less if they suspend me or not,’ the former footy star said.

‘My son said: ‘Have you got any tickets?’ I said: ‘No, but I get a ticket from the MCG because I am a member.”

‘I said: ‘Why don’t you get one from the MCG?’

‘So he applied and got one and he had a friend in Perth who he gave the ticket to.’

According to the MCC’s guidelines, a ‘lower grade’ abuse of the club’s ticket and pass guidelines can be sanctioned by a suspension of between six to 24 months depending on the case.

‘Then he called me on the day and said his friend couldn’t get in because ‘they said he was trying to impersonate you’ (Newman) and ‘that the other bit of bad news is you have been suspended from going to next year’s grand final because you have tried to sneak someone in on your ticket’.

‘I had no intention of trying to sneak anyone in. I just thought if I get issued a ticket I can give it to someone.

A spokesperson from the MCC was unable to comment on Newman's claims

A spokesperson from the MCC was unable to comment on Newman’s claims

‘Ignorance is bliss. I don’t care if they ban me from every Grand Final because while they go on with that pompous, arrogant, nonsense beforehand (the Welcome to Country), I just won’t go.’

A spokesperson from the MCC was unable to comment on Newman’s claims, according to The Herald Sun.

‘The Melbourne Cricket Club does not make comment in relation to disciplinary matters and all members must adhere to the Club’s Code of Conduct,’ a spokesperson said to the outlet.

‘Eligible members of the Melbourne Cricket Club were able to access the 2024 AFL Grand Final subject to membership restrictions which were communicated to members in advance of the event.’
