Why this photo of Governor-General Sam Mostyn with her ‘amazing friend’ is raising eyebrows

A happy snap has emerged of the Governor-General posing with a militant activist responsible for leading pro-Palestine rallies while banging a ‘f**k Israel’ drum.

The apparent selfie was taken in 2023 and showed Sam Mostyn and Welfare Alliance chief executive officer Vivienne Moore smiling at the camera.

Ms Moore is believed to have led 50 of the 53 Sydney rallies held against Israeli actions against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

On her Instagram account, Ms Moore – who in March was charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of damaging property from an incident at a pro-Palestinian rally that month – has shared a series of gushing posts about Ms Mostyn.

When Ms Mostyn was appointed chair of mental health charity Beyond Blue last year she was congratulated by Ms Moore with the caption ‘love you Sam’ on Instagram.

Ms Moore also enthused about Ms Mostyn appearing on ABC show The Drum saying she was one her ‘favourite people’.

‘Watching our amazing friend @sammostyn on the Drum tonight,’ Ms Moore wrote.

A spokesman for Ms Mostyn told Daily Mail Australia that the Governor-General did not support Ms Moore’s protest activities.

‘The Governor-General volunteered alongside Ms Moore during Covid packing food boxes and assisting with mental health organisations,’ the spokesperson said.

‘She has not spoken to Ms Moore since well before taking Office and has never discussed Ms Moore’s protest activity with her.

‘The Governor-General does not condone Ms Moore’s actions.’

It is also understood the two women met at Marrickville’s Addison Road Community Centre.

On its website the charity says it works ‘with the community, we elevate human rights, arts & culture and sustainability’.

‘We rescue food, fight hunger, and are leaders in the grassroots #RacismNotWelcome campaign with our Ambassador, Craig Foster,’ the website states.

Mr Foster resigned was once the co-chair of the Australian Republican Movement before he resigned in May.

The ARM is a non-partisan organisation that campaigns for Australia to become a republic, abolishing the role of Governor-General along the way.

On her social media, Ms Moore has many posts accusing Israel of ‘genocide’ and accusing the Albanese government of being complicit in this.

‘So much blood on this governments hands, complicity with a f***ing GENOCIDE,’ she wrote in Facebook post tagging Anthony Albanese on September 22.

Another post shows two protesters wearing blood-stained business clothes and masks of foreign minister Penny Wong.

‘2WONGS do not make a RIGHT,’ Ms Moore captioned the photo.

‘Shame on you @senatorpennywong you WAR CRIMINAL’.

In an Instagram post, Ms Moore shared a cartoon of a viper with an Israeli flag drawn on it enveloping the world in its coils.

She shared on her social media that she also took part in the violent protests against a military expo in Melbourne last month.

Ms Moore was also part of a protest group that shouted abuse and accused Labor Inner West councillors of being Nazis for voting down a Boycott, Divest, Sanction motion.

Australian Jewish Association Chief Executive Officer Robert Gregory said the association between Ms Mostyn and Ms Moore was a worrying one.

‘Many Australians will be concerned if our Governor-General is close to someone leading racist rallies and who has been charged with attacking police officers,’ he said.

‘If the relationship is as close as claimed, it is hard to believe that the Governor-General is oblivious to Vivienne Moore’s leadership role in dozens of ugly, divisive protests as well as her sharing of racist images on social media.

‘National leadership roles come with significant responsibilities. It would be reassuring to the Australian community if the Governor-General publicly distanced herself from the extremism of her self-described “amazing mate”.’

The charges against Ms Moore are understood to relate to throwing red ink during a protest.

She pleaded not guilty to each charge in May, with the case to be heard at a special fixture next year.

Daily Mail Australia contacted Ms Moore for comment.
