A teenager has been charged with attempting to murder a police officer in South Australia.

Police allege the 15-year-old boy struck the officer twice in the head with a torch as he approached him around 10.20pm on Thursday in Whyalla Stuart.

The officer spotted the boy in a park on Wittwer St and went to check on his welfare as he had been reported missing earlier that evening by family members.

Following the alleged attack, he fled the scene.

He was located a short time later at his Whyalla Stuart home at about 11.45pm and was charged with attempted murder.

The injured officer, 34, was taken to Whyalla Hospital to receive treatment. He has since been discharged.

The teen has been refused bail and will appear in the Whyalla Magistrates Court on Friday.
