‘Wife’, 83, is charged with murder of 85-year-old husband who was found stabbed at home

An 83-year-old woman has been charged with the murder of elderly man believed to be her husband after he was found stabbed to death.

Alan Grayson, 85, was found stabbed to death at home on Orgreave Lane, Sheffield by emergency services who were unable to save his life. 

Police arrested Marjorie Grayson, 83, believed to be his wife, who was remanded in custody to appear before Sheffield Magistrate’s Court this morning.

Mr Grayson, who was reportedly married to his wife Mrs Grayson for 60 years, died from a fatal stab wound. 

Locals have expressed their horror over the grim discovery that Mr Grayson’s killing. 

They told of their ‘disbelief’, saying the couple had been been lived on the quiet residential street for more than 50 years. 

A 57-year-old neighbour, who lived a few doors away, said the couple had lived there since before she was born and she had known them her entire life.

She described them as a ‘lovely couple’ who were ‘always together’ and could be regularly seen pottering about in the garden. 

The neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: ‘I’d been on an early shift this morning then came home and saw all this happening.

‘At first, you just think someone’s been taken ill when you see an ambulance. They were lovely – always just pottering around in their garden and always stopped for a proper chat.

‘They were one of the originals from the street still left. It’s just hard to believe – I’m so upset.’

Mr Grayson had been an architect and Mrs Grayson worked at a local garage. They had two sons and a number of grandchildren. 

The woman said police had knocked on her door to ask what kind of relationship the elderly couple had and whether they had ever been seen arguing.

She said police had described it as a ‘tragic domestic incident’.

The woman added: ‘They used to go out walking together all the time. That’s why this is so hard to get your head around.’

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said emergency services were called to the house following a report that the 85-year-old man was seriously injured.

‘The man was treated for a stab wound at the scene but sadly died shortly after,’ the spokesman added.

‘An 83-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Police are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.’
