San Diego Padres third-base coach Matt Williams and his wife, former news anchor Erika Monroe are separating.

Monroe filed for divorce after two decades of marriage, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’, according to TMZ.

Williams, who had been married twice before, wed Monroe in 2003 and the two share a daughter.

Back in a 2014 interview with the Washington Post, Monroe spoke about their early romance after they crossed paths at an event.

‘Matt was persistent,’ said Monroe, who said that she did not want to date an athlete.

‘And we ended up finally, after a few months, going on a date. After that, it was over. It just took getting to that table.’

In his baseball playing days, Williams was a five-time All-Star and won four Gold Glove awards and four Silver Slugger awards.

He finished the lockout-shortened 1994 season as the NL home run leader and was on track to challenge for the then-record for homers in a season of 61, held by Roger Maris and broken years later by Mark McGwire.

From 1987-2003, Williams played for the San Francisco Giants, the Cleveland Indians, and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

With the latter, Williams won the 2001 World Series in seven games over the New York Yankees.

After retirement, Williams coached briefly in minor roles with the Diamondbacks before becoming the manager of the Washington Nationals for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He was named NL Manager of the Year in 2014.

He was fired after the latter season when the team failed to make the postseason after entering 2015 as World Series favorites.

Since his firing, Williams has been the third-base coach for the Oakland Athletics and the San Diego Padres.
