Wild moment a man is punched after blocking traffic in a busy nightlife strip

Confronting moment man with a mullet is hit from behind after blocking traffic – and hitter argues he had to step in

  • Footage shows a man being knocked-out after he is king-hit from behind
  • Police confirmed they were called to the incident on Friday on the Gold Coast
  • But in a twist they have only charged the 18-year-old man who was punched

A man stopping traffic and yelling at drivers was viciously punched from behind then dragged to the side of the street in an ugly incident caught on video.

Footage taken in the Gold Coast party precinct of Cavill Ave has circulated on social media – but there is more to the situation than first appears with police charging the man who was punched.

The mullet-wearing reveller can be seen in the clip aggressively yelling and pointing at a driver before an onlooker walks up from behind and viciously strikes him.

The alleged attacker then drags the knocked-out man over the asphalt with the help of bystanders and leaves him lying on the sidewalk.

The puncher, who did not want to be identified, told 7News he hit the man because he had ‘threatened’ families who were getting ice cream at the popular tourist hotspot.

‘Several kids (were) screaming and crying. No one would step in and the police had been contacted,’ the man said.

He also alleged the man had struck a woman who was waiting at nearby traffic lights and that bystanders had thanked him for king-hitting the man.

Police confirmed they were called to Cavill Ave at about 8.40pm on Friday and found an 18-year-old man ‘on his back’ following an assault.

After inquiries, officers subsequently charged him with being a public nuisance.

‘It will be alleged that the man had threatened a woman, before slapping drinks out of person’s hands and spitting in their direction.’ a Queensland Police spokesperson said.

They added no complaint had been made over the assault of the 18-year-old, who was also banned from the Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach nightclub precincts.
