Winter, what winter? Boston has seen its second lowest amount of January-February snow ever

Winter, what winter? Boston has seen its second lowest amount of snow ever while New York experienced just 4.8 inches of snow this year as spring fast approaches

  • Boston saw just 15.1 inches of snowfall this winter – 17.1 inches below normal
  • New York City experienced the ninth least amount of snowfall – 4.8 inches
  • Philadelphia picked up 0.3 inches of snow – the second-least-snowy winter ever

The Northeast United States has had one of its mildest winters on record.

January and February of 2020 have seen just 3.6 inches of snow in Boston – the least amount during this two-month span since the all-time lowest total in 1937.

The total amount of snowfall in Boston this past winter was 15.1 inches – well below the 32.2 inches that is considered normal through February 23.

The extremely mild temperatures this winter makes it more likely that March will also be warmer than usual, according to WBZ-TV.

In the three winter months of December, January, and February, Boston has experienced more days above 60 degrees than below 32 degrees.

The high temperature in Boston surpassed 60 degrees six times this winter – December 9, 10, and 14; January 11 and 12; and February 24.

Other cities in the Northeast have also seen paltry snowfall this winter.

New York City has seen just 4.8 inches of snowfall so far this winter – the ninth-least-snowy on record.

Through Sunday, Philadelphia picked up just 0.3 inches of snow – the second-least-snowy winter in the city’s history, according to The Weather Channel.

Most of that snow fell on January 18, and no snow has fallen since then.

In an average season, 17.9 inches of snow would have fallen in Philadelphia by February 23.

This past February in Boston tied for the fourth warmest on record.

The average temperature in Boston during the month – 37.3 degrees – was 5.9 degrees above the average.

If current trends continue through next week, this February will likely reach the top three warmest ever.

Boston’s total snowfall this February has been a paltry half-an-inch – making it seventh on the all-time lowest snowfall months on record.

Another major New England city – Providence, Rhode Island – saw just a trace of snow in February, making it the least amount of snow to ever fall in the city.
