Woman, 25, is arrested in murder probe after man stabbed to death in street fight 

A 25-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the murder investigation of a man who was stabbed to death following a street fight last night. 

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was taken to hospital with wounds in his neck and died after police were called to reports of a fight in Berwick Street, Rochdale, shortly before 9pm. 

Neighbours described how a large-scale ruckus had broken out earlier in the evening involving around a dozen men, as well as women.

Saba Hanith, 17, said: ‘There were a lot of lads shouting at each other and being really aggressive.

‘There were others who were fighting and using their fists.

‘It was going on for a while and lots of people were watching as well.

‘There were about a dozen men, and some women too but I didn’t realise someone had been stabbed until later.’

It’s believed the fight lasted for around 20 minutes before police were alerted and at some point the man was stabbed. 

Mother-of-three Sima Rehman, 35, saw paramedics giving the victim CPR as he lay injured in the street.

‘It was about 9pm and I could see police cars and an ambulance outside,’ she said.

‘They were doing CPR on the man who was lying in the road. They were trying to resuscitate him.’

‘I can’t believe he’s been stabbed and it’s given my mother-in-law a real shock.’

Mohammed Taj, 75, had returned from a family meal about 9.45pm and saw several police cars parked nearby.

‘My grandson told me there had been a big fight and someone had been stabbed,’ he said.

‘I’m really shocked because it’s normally a very quiet area. It’s very peaceful usually.’

Detective Superintendent Howard Millington said: 'We are keeping an open mind as to the circumstances around the incident and I would appeal for anyone with any information or anyone who witnessed the incident that took place to contact us as a matter of urgency

Detective Chief Inspector Cheryl Chatterton of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: ‘This incident escalated extremely quickly before we were called to the area and sadly, we’re now dealing with the death of a man.

‘While our investigation into the circumstances that led to him losing his life continues, his family are being offered support from specialists as they deal with the tragic news.

‘Part of our enquiries will mean there is some disruption in the local area but we will try and keep this to a minimum and thank the public in advance for their cooperation.

‘It was getting dark around the time of the incident last night so I appreciate there may not have been many people in the area but should you have seen something, whatever it is, please get in touch with us.

‘We already know that a number of people in the area heard the disturbance so if you do have something to tell us but you’ve not yet got in touch with us, please do so at your earliest opportunity.’
