Woman, 41, fronts court over hit-and-run of 13-year-old

The woman charged over a hit-and-run crash that left a 13-year-old girl in an induced coma has made her first court appearance in Melbourne.

Thi Nguyen, 41, from Sunshine North, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday after she knocked teenager Alice Lewis from her bike on November 5.

Alice was hit while crossing the road at Bell and Sussex streets in Coburg about 8pm.

The 13-year-old remains in an induced coma at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Police allege Nguyen was driving a BMW hatchback when she hit the girl and then drove away from the crash scene.

The 41-year-old handed herself in to police four days after the crash and was charged with multiple offences.

Nguyen was charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury and failing to stop and render assistance.

Investigators later seized an abandoned dark grey BMW linked to the tragic crash, in Braybrook in the city’s west.

Alice, who was not wearing a helmet, is believed to have been riding her bike with two friends at the time. 

Nguyen was assisted in court through an interpreter and had her bail extended.

She was ordered to reappear in court for a committal mention in March.
