Woman, 84, ‘was fired from Walmart for taking a $1 bill’

Frankie Ruffino, 84, says she was fired from a local Walmart because she picked up a $1 bill from the floor and didn’t return it immediately

An 84-year-old Texas woman claims she has been fired from a Walmart because she picked up a $1 bill from the floor and didn’t return it immediately.

According to Frankie Ruffino, she began working at the Walmart Supercenter in Brenham in 2008 as a door greeter, and became a phone operator when her health worsened.

The twice breast cancer survivor says she maintained a spotless record throughout the nearly 10 years she worked for the company.

That was until October 10, when, Ruffino told KBTX, she picked up a $1 bill in one of the aisles while working her usual night shift, and put it in her walker, planning on giving it back the next day.

‘I get off at 10 and I lock everything up. I go to the front, and there was a dollar bill laying there on the floor, right in the middle of the aisle, not in the register,’ Ruffino said to KBTX.

‘It was late and I still had to drive home 14 miles so I didn’t think it was going to be a problem.’

The next day, Ruffino says, she was called into a meeting with managers where they asked her if she had found any money. She told them she had, and handed the money over.

She finished her shift, but when she returned the next day, she was informed that she was fired because of her ‘integrity,’ she told KHOU.

‘I took a deep breath, as deep as I can take, went to the drug store, got my medicine and drove home, I just was so upset,’ Ruffino told said to the local news outlet.

According to KHOU, Ruffino depended on the Walmart paycheck to purchase the medication and oxygen tank she needs to survive.

Ruffino added that she would have rather management told her they had to let her go because of her age and ailing health than telling her she ‘doesn’t have any integrity’.

Her daughter Brenda Fowler says the incident has distressed Ruffino, who merely wants answers about why she was really let go.

‘I gave it my all, that’s all I can say, never came late,” she told KHOU. ‘I wanted to work real bad.’

According to her hairdresser, Carrie Bozarth, Ruffino was beloved by the community who knew her as the friendly face who greeted them every time they went to the Brenham Walmart.

Management at the Brenham Walwart told Dailymail.com they were making no comments on the matter at this time.
