His wife Joan said it was a routine visit ‘for treatment for some lower backache’ at Chiropractic 1st clinic in York.
But he fell ill during the appointment and was admitted directly to Leeds General Infirmary where he died the next day, on August 12, his family claims.
A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said officers were ‘alerted to the sudden death of an 80-year-old man at a chiropractic clinic’.
The police spokeswoman added: ‘An investigation is ongoing to establish the cause of death.
‘A 40-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. She has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.’
North Yorkshire Police would not name the person who was arrested.
Dr Arleen Scholten from Chiropractic 1st said she had been advised not to comment while investigations continue.
The General Chiropractic Council investigated last month and decided not to imposed an interim suspension of Dr Scholten’s chiropractic registration.
Mrs Lawler paid tribute to her husband who worked as a bank manager at Barclays Bank in Parliament Street, York, for 44 years before his retirement.
She said: ‘He was a much loved husband, father and an incredible grandfather. We had been married for 55 years, and had three children, and five grandchildren.
‘His family and friends were devastated by his sudden death, and we look forward to the precise cause of his death being resolved as quickly as possible.

‘It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to say anymore with the inquest coming up. Needless to say it has been a huge shock for the family.
‘I could say a lot about what has happened, but I wont until the inquest is done.’

An inquest into Mr Lawler’s death was opened on September 18, and adjourned to a later date.
