A young woman has admitted she wants to dump her boyfriend of five months because he is about to get his leg amputated.

Stacy called into Sydney’s Kyle and Jackie O show with her dilemma saying her boyfriend was in a freak workplace accident and broke his leg so badly it needs to be amputated.

The 26-year-old said wasn’t ’emotionally invested’ enough in the relationship to take on supporting her short-term partner through the emotional and physical trauma of losing a limb.

Stacy, 26, called into the Kyle and Jackie O show asking if she is in the wrong for wanting to dump her boyfriend because he has to have his leg amputated after a workplace accident

Stacy said her boyfriend, who she met online just over five months ago, broke his leg badly when he was trapped and crushed under some metal steelwork after it wasn’t strapped to a forklift properly.

After three weeks of seeing doctors, they finally received the news he would have to have his entire leg amputated – a blow that has seen Stacy’s boyfriend go into a ‘depressive state’.

‘I’m fine with being with someone with a prosthetic leg, if I had met him and he had had it already that’s fine. I’m not superficial like that,’ Stacy said.

‘It’s the fact that I’ve only known him six months and the amount of physical therapy he’s going to have to go through and it’s also that he’s not taking it well. I’m having to sacrifice so much for this person I’ve literally only known for six months.’

I don’t know whether to do it now before the surgery or do I wait until the surgery is done but then I’m stuck having to help with the physio

Stacy said before the accident she was ‘fully invested’ in the relationship, and the pair were ‘in love’ and and had even planned future travels together.

‘If we were together for years or he was my husband that’s different but I’m in this pickle,’ she said.

‘He has friends and family that can help but I just don’t think I can lock myself into this. This is something I didn’t sign up for.’

Kyle sided with Stacy saying it must be ‘driving her crazy’ that everyone has put her in a ‘carer position’ however, Jackie wasn’t convinced and asked Stacy how she would go about breaking it off with him if that’s what she decides to do.

‘That’s what I don’t know – I don’t know whether to do it now before the surgery or do I wait until the surgery is done but then I’m stuck having to help with the physio. It’s like an endless cycle,’ she answered.

Kyle suggested Stacy should put her feelings out on the table and talk it through with her boyfriend however Jackie disagreed saying she either needs to ‘rip the Band-Aid off or honestly give it a go’.

‘I honestly don’t know what to do I feel like I’m being so selfish – I didn’t want to come out for my summer and now spend my summer with him in rehab,’ Stacy said.

‘He fully expects that I would stay and that’s what makes it even harder because I think if that happened to me and he left me how horrible that would make me feel.’

Hundreds online were divided on the dilemma and many were outraged with Stacy’s ‘selfishness’.

‘Oh my god! He’s just lost a leg. He’ll need help for the first little bit but then I’m sure he’ll be pretty independent. She doesn’t love him so go and let him find someone that does and would stay through hard times,’ one listener wrote.

‘Stacey is just cruel and not worthy of having as a girlfriend! Work accidents happen! She should be grateful and happy that her boyfriend is alive and she should be doing everything possible to help and support him!’ another said.

However many sympathised with Stacy agreeing she should leave her boyfriend.

‘Tough call, she needs to do what’s she feel is right for her. Love and caring for someone are totally different fields!!!’ one woman commented.

‘It’s your life you don’t anyone anything, he’s not your responsibility. Leave,’ a second responded.

‘Boyfriend for five months not husband for five years I would leave,’ a third said.
