Shocking footage has emerged of a woman driving while nursing an unrestrained toddler on her lap.

The woman was caught with her baby behind the wheel through a busy intersection in Auckland, New Zealand.

The man filming hurled abuse towards the driver but she responded by putting her rude finger up as she drove away with the child still on her lap.

‘Hey what are you doing?’ the man filming shouted.

‘I’m taking this to the police,’ he said.

The video was shared to social media, with many slamming the woman for putting her baby in danger.

‘I hope they called the police. This is shocking!’ one commented on Facebook.

‘OMG what the heck was she thinking? I would have followed her and called the police on her,’ another wrote.

‘Can only pray the police have caught up with her,’ someone commented.

Michael Rickards, Policing Manager Acting Inspector for Waitematā Police District, said they were aware of the video and were making inquiries with the registered owner of the car.

‘Sadly, this video is a prime example of poor decision-making behind the wheel,’ Inspector Rickards told the New Zealand Herald.

‘Nearly a third of people who die on New Zealand roads are not wearing seat belts. It’s a really simple message – restraints save lives.

‘Being properly restrained is important for all occupants of a vehicle, including children. Even in a low speed impact it can cause a great deal of harm to an unrestrained child.’

All children under seven must be restrained when travelling in cars in New Zealand.

Drivers who break these rules will receive a NZ$150 fine.
