Woman hanged herself after being accused of being escort

Former call centre worker Emma Matthews, 30, was accused of being paid for sex when screenshots of messages to men were allegedly taken from her phone

A woman hanged herself in a hotel room after a series of posts accusing her of  working as an escort were posted on Facebook.

Former call centre worker Emma Matthews, 30, from Ferndale, Rhondda Cynon Taf, was accused of being paid for sex when screenshots of messages to men were allegedly taken from her phone.

An inquest heard the screenshots were posted to Facebook by another woman after she found Emma at her boyfriend’s home.

The hearing was told many messages were posted online during the row between the two women.

Just two days after the messages were posted online Ms Matthews was found dead in a hotel room by a cleaner.

The inquest was told Ms Matthews had gone to a hotel with friend Siobhan Wilcox and two men.

Ms Wilcox and the two men left the Scotts Hotel in Llantwit Fadre, near Pontypridd, South Wales at 12.30am.

The inquest in Aberdare heard Ms Matthews was found dead at 9.20am the following morning on July 30 last year.

Investigating officer Detectve Constable Ian Jones said: ‘Siobhan Wilcox said Emma was fine but she had a lot on her mind.

‘She said there were Facebook posts revealing that Emma was an escort and her mother had seen it and kicked her out of her home.’

Police found no evidence of foul play surrounding Ms Matthews’ death.

Stepdad Mark Lloyd said in a statement: ‘Emma was a person who would go out of her way to help anyone. She had a big heart.’

Pathologist Dr Stephen Leadbeater said the medical cause of death was ‘pressure on the neck.’

Coroner Andrew Barkley said accusations Ms Matthews was an escort were a cause of anxiety.

Mr Barkley said: ‘It seems that the fact she had been found to be acting in this way is a source of anxiety to her and her family.’

The coroner recording a narrative conclusion said that her ‘intention was unclear.’
