A woman has been killed after a car ploughed into her house and forced nearby homes to be evacuated amid gas leak fears.  

The vehicle smashed into a property in Clevedon, Somerset, around 8.30pm on Friday.

Avon and Somerset Police said significant damage was caused to the home and ‘tragically a woman inside has died’.

The woman’s family have been informed of her death, the force added.

Officers said the occupants of the vehicle, a man and a woman, have been taken into custody.

Residents of neighbouring houses on Yeolands Drive were evacuated for the night due to fears a gas pipe was damaged in the crash.
