A woman was trampled by a camel that had been ‘roaming free’ along a street in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

The woman, aged in her 50s, is now in hospital with injuries to her wrist after she was knocked by the camel in Gympie at about 10am on Saturday.

She’d been on Noosa Street in Mothar Mountain when she came across the rogue animal, which was understood to have been roaming around on its own.

It is not know where the animal came from.

Earlier this month three camels were spotted on the loose in northern Brisbane, after they escaped their pen at a church nativity scene.

The Bridgeman Baptist Community Church, in Bridgeman Downs, confirmed the animals had wandered off, with footage capturing them strolling down a busy road, causing traffic to come to a standstill.

A spokesperson for the church told Daily Mail Australia the camels had been a part of their Christmas shows and were looked after by a local company specialising in camel rides, Camelot Camels.

Owner, Melanie Fitzgibbon, said it took about 30 minutes to bring back the cheeky camels.

‘Where we are they’re housed quite safely, and we fed them this morning and my husband said he’d take them for a walk and when he went to check on them they’d opened the gate,’ she said.

‘They were on foot just a bit further ahead of us, we knew where they were it was just a matter of catching up with them – they’re quick travellers.’

Ms Fitzgibbon said the camels were brought back safely.

‘It was definitely something for the commuters to see!’ she said.
