Young woman is mowed down by an SUV and killed when her car broke down on the side of the highway and she waved for help

A woman has been struck and killed after the blue Holden Commodore she was in broke down on a busy highway.

The 26 year old had been waving other vehicles down after running out of fuel on the northbound carriageway of the Kwinana Freeway in Stake Hill in Western Australia on 1040pm on Thursday.

It is understood she was hit by a red Mitsubishi Outlander after she got out of the Commodore in the emergency lane.

The woman was driving from Collie in the state’s south west with her friend to see mates in Perth when they ran out of petrol, the West Australian said.

They both got out to flag down other cars before she was tragically struck by the other vehicle.

She suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

The second woman in her 20s who is believed to have been a passenger was taken by St John WA services to Rockingham Hospital.

The SUV driver was not physically injured.

The highway between Mandjoogoordap Drive and Paganoni Road northbound was reopened at 4am on Friday.

Major crash investigators urged anyone who saw the crash or the female pedestrian in the area to contact Crimestoppers.

Main Roads WA said people who break down on the freeway should stay inside their vehicles where possible with their seatbelt on and hazard lights flashing.
