Woman left fighting for life after being mauled by two dogs – and she was only freed when cops pepper sprayed the beasts

A woman has been left fighting for her life after being viciously mauled by two dogs that encircled her on a country road.

The attack happened in Trebeck Court on the outskirts of the south east Victorian coastal town of Winchelsea at around 4am on Thursday.

Fortunately for the woman, her cries for help attracted the attention of police officers who were forced to use pepper spray on the savage animals to prise them from the 54-year-old, the Geelong Advertiser reported.

Paramedics were called and treated the woman at the scene before rushing her to Geelong Hospital with critical injuries to a leg and to her upper body.

The woman remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Officers captured the two dogs and they have since been handed over to council rangers.

It is not clear what breed the dogs are.

Victoria Police are investigating the circumstances of the attack and why the woman was out in the early hours.

Surf Coast Shire general manager of community Gail Gatt said the onus was on dog owners to keep control of their pets.
