Woman covered in horrific scars after a ‘failed’ laser pigmentation removal treatment: ‘My skin is peeling off’

  • Sydney woman said she went as a ‘skin model’ to trial a new machine there

A young woman has shown off her horrific scars after a failed laser treatment, and said her ‘skin is peeling off’ and the white marks on her chest may take ‘weeks to months to recover’.

The Sydney woman, Clare Schimpl, shared two videos after having laser pigmentation treatment on TikTok and said she went in to an unnamed location as a ‘skin model’ where she trialled a new machine.

Laser pigmentation removal traditionally works to safely and effectively reduce the appearance of freckles, pigmentation and age spots.

Clare said she had the pigmentation removal treatment done on her face and décolletage.

And while ‘thankfully’ there are no burns or marks on her face, she said that a week after the treatment she was ‘feeling miserable’ about the scarring on her chest.

‘One week post treatment and feeling miserable,’ Clare captioned a video showing the marks on her chest.

She added in the clip: ‘POV: You did laser pigmentation removal and they put the settings too high’.

She later shared another clip nine days later where she wrote ‘day nine post failed laser treatment’.

Clare added: ‘Update: Skin is peeling off and dealing with extreme itchiness.

‘Dermatologists have said the burns look superficial, like grade one burns, and the white postage stamp marks will take weeks to months to recover’.

Many who saw the clips were quick to speculate about Clare’s skin ahead of the treatment.

‘Sorry this happened to you. I’m a laser therapist and you are definitely too olive for pigment removal. They shouldn’t have done it,’ one person wrote.

But others said it ‘looks like she didn’t tell them she was in the sun a lot as laser on sunburn is this’.

Daily Mail Australia is not implying either of these is true.

Clare responded to some of the comments, writing: ‘I sent photos to my friend who is a dermatologist and he assured me there won’t be any permanent damage’.

She said she has been ‘avoiding the sun like the plague and lathering on moisturiser’.

She also clarified that she has been given some after-care products and she is doing back every second day for LED light therapy treatments.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Clare for comment.

Laser pigmentation removal treatment: The facts

* Laser Pigmentation Removal works to safely and effectively reduce the appearance of freckles, pigmentation, and age spots.

* The laser targets only the pigmented lesion in the skin which absorbs the light, without damaging the surrounding skin.

* The laser heats up and shatters the pigment. The pigment is then drawn to the surface without harming the surrounding tissue.

* Once drawn to the surface, the pigmented lesions will fade or dry and flake off the treated area, leaving the skin with an even tone and complexion.

* Two weeks prior to treatment you avoid direct sun exposure and apply SPF50.

* You should also avoid laser, IPL, skin needling and cosmetic grade peels, as well as fake tan, solarium or tanning drugs.

* There is minimal downtime with this treatment and side effects may include redness, swelling and sensitivity.

* These side effects are temporary and will subside with correct aftercare. You can expect peeling and darkening of the treated pigmentation around 3-5 days after the treatment. This usually lasts 7-10 days.

* Pigmentation Removal is suitable for individuals with fair to light skin tones (Fitzpatrick 1-2) and who are not prone to hyperpigmentation.

The laser targets only the pigmented lesion in the skin which absorbs the light, without damaging the surrounding skin.

The laser heats up and shatters the pigment. The pigment is then drawn to the surface without harming the surrounding tissue.

Once drawn to the surface, the pigmented lesions will fade or dry and flake off the treated area, leaving the skin with an even tone and complexion.

Laser Clinics advise that two weeks prior to treatment you avoid direct sun exposure and apply SPF50.

You should also avoid laser, IPL, skin needling and cosmetic grade peels, as well as fake tan, solarium or tanning drugs.
