A woman who fell in love with an incarcerated felon is furious that he has been out of prison for an entire month and has yet to propose to her.
Johnna, 26, from Tampa, Florida, begins to question her relationship with Garrett, 25, after he failed to come home following a wild night of partying with his friends.
In a preview clip for Friday night’s episode of WeTV reality series Love After Lockup, Johnna lashes out at Garrett for ruining her birthday with his all-nighter — all the while complaining that he still hasn’t popped the question.
Trouble: Garrett, 25, gets an earful from his girlfriend Johnna, 26, after spending the night out with his friends on Friday night’s episode of WeTV reality series Love After Lockup
What is he waiting for? Not only is Johnn angry with him for staying out all night and ruining her birthday she is upset that he has been out of prison for a month and still hasn’t proposed
Johnna started her romance with Garrett four years ago after a wine-fueled search for love online led her to write him a letter.
After serving a nearly seven-year sentence for burglary, grand theft, and several other counts, Garrett was released from prison and moved in with Johnna.
On last week’s episode of the show, Garrett slept in his car after going to a bunch of strip clubs with his friends. He didn’t come home to the apartment he shares with Johnna until after work the next day.
When he was prison, Garrett told Johnna that he couldn’t wait to get out and build a life with her. But now that he is able to drink and go out with friends, his priorities seemed to have changed.
Johnna is utterly disgusted by how he has chosen to enjoy his newfound freedom so far, and she stresses that they ‘would not be together’ if it wasn’t her birthday.
Whoops: Garrett slept in his car after going to a bunch of strip clubs with his friends and didn’t come home to the apartment he shares with Johnna until after work the next day
Big mistake: Garrett admits that he ‘really did take it too far’ this time, but he vows to make it up to her
‘It is hurting my pride to stay with you,’ she says, ‘because what you did was unacceptable.’
Although she and Garrett aren’t on the best of terms, they have already made plans with her friends, and she doesn’t feel comfortable canceling.
‘Garrett has seriously ruined my entire birthday by pulling this s**t,’ she explains in her testemonial. ‘But I feel obligated to put on a happy face for the friends that I invited out for my birthday.’
Meanwhile, Garrett doesn’t know what else he can say to Johnna to make it better.
‘I came home. I apologized. We talked,’ he says, proving that Johnna was right when she said he wasn’t understanding what she was saying.
True love? Johnna started her romance with Garrett four years ago after a wine-fueled search for love online led her to his ‘hot mugshot’
Making it last? Johnna started writing him letters, and they spent four years together while he finished up his nearly seven-year sentence for burglary, grand theft, and several other counts
‘You’re just not being the man that you said you were going to be, and that’s why I get p****d off,’ she tells him. ‘I just feel like one of those girls who got fooled.’
During his testemonial, Garrett admits that he ‘really did take it too far’ this time, but he vows to make it up with her.
‘I really screwed it up. I can’t lose out on her,’ he says. ‘I’ll do whatever I have to do to make this right.’
Garrett tells Johnna he loves her and urges her to try and have a good night with him on her birthday, but she isn’t sure if she can.
‘You know the ball is in your court. Let’s see if you don’t p**s me off again,’ she tells him as she leaves the room.
Bucking tradition: Garrett moved into Johnna’s home in Tampa, Florida, immediately after he was released from prison
Keeping it real: Garrett, who had been in jail since he was 18 years old (left), admitted ‘he’s not some upright, perfect all-American guy’
Modern fairy tale? Despite their untraditional courtship, Johnna wants a traditional engagement and wedding as soon as possible
Although she didn’t bring it up, Johnna is also seriously peeved that he hasn’t popped the question yet.
‘Garrett’s been home a month now, and he still has not proposed,’ she tells the camera.
‘I’ve read studies that show that inmates who are released and get married within 60 days have a better chance of staying out of prison, but I’m honsetly so frustrated with Garrett that if he did propose I don’t even know if I would say yes.’
This type of behavior is exactly what Johnna’s father Tony predicted when he met Garrett for the first time.
The dad made it clear that he thinks the felon is going to abandon his daughter now that he is free to date other women, and he certainly has valid reasons for having reservations.
Say it isn’t true: Johnna’s dad Tony (left) thinks Garrett only wanted her when he was incarcerated because she was his only option
New warden: The two have been fighting about him going out with his friends since he was released from prison
Garrett had been locked up since he was 18 years old. He never lived with a woman before. He’s never even had a drink legally until now.
Johnna and Garrett both admitted on the show’s premiere that they don’t have a traditional relationship.
‘I’m a 24-year-old man who has been incarcerated for the majority of his childhood,’ he said. ‘I’m not some upright, perfect all-American guy.’
Meanwhile, Johnna confessed that she found Garrett after she had ‘one too many glasses of moscato’ and decided to look up guys online.
‘Once I saw his mugshot, I was like, ‘Wow, this guy takes a really hot mugshot.” I was like what’s it going to kill me to write him a letter?’ she recalled.
Despite their untraditional courtship, Johnna wants a traditional engagement, wedding, and, eventually, pregnancy. She is determined to make their relationship work whatever the cost.
