A woman who offered to pay for a young mother’s groceries after she was caught shoplifting at a supermarket has sparked an ethical debate.

Chrissy Bull was shopping in Petrie, north of Brisbane, while on her way to work when she saw a mother with her two children begging staff not to call the police.

‘I offered to pay for whatever the items were so she hopefully wouldn’t get in trouble,’ Ms Bull said.

‘Was I stupid? I rarely question things I do but I am with this.

‘I felt for her and may have judged her appearance unfairly however she appeared to be a struggling mum I felt for her.’

Ms Bull said she didn’t pay for the woman’s shopping as the ‘manager was dealing with it’.

Commenters offered their own opinion on Ms Bull’s dilemma.

Some said they would have helped the mother because of her children.

‘I seriously can’t stand thieves, I think very lowly of them but I also have a heart and seeing the poor little kids having to witness that I would have done the same,’ a woman said.

‘Hopefully she rethinks and [doesn’t] chance that again.

‘Also good that management refused your help. A quick solution is not necessarily the best solution.’

Another man said people should refrain from being quick to judge.

‘Who has never sinned before throw the first f**king rock!’ he said.

‘No-one knows her story as she doesn’t know yours. I think you done a top job mate,’ one man said.

‘It’s only shoplifting if you can’t afford it.’
