Woman sped from McDonald’s with driver on bonnet after row

Swansea Crown Court heard Deborah Ellson, 42,(pictured outside court) got into the row with BMW driver Jonathan Morgan over a parking space in the branch of McDonald’s

A woman sped off from a McDonald’s carpark with another driver clinging on to her bonnet before going around two roundabouts as he frantically hung on to her windscreen wipers.

Swansea Crown Court heard Deborah Ellson, 42, got into the row with BMW driver Jonathan Morgan over a parking space.

The court was told she drove into Mr Morgan, 33, before speeding off with him still clinging for onto her wipers.

Ellson then drove around two roundabouts – and Mr Morgan only let go when he feared she was about to drive on to a dual carriageway.

Mr Morgan suffered cuts and bruises after having to throw himself onto a roundabout.

Mr Morgan told the court: ‘There was traffic coming in the opposite direction and I was afraid of being run over.

‘But in the end I had no choice but to let go and slide off.’

Swansea Crown Court heard the row began when Mr Morgan and partner Bianca Roberts returned to their BMW in McDonald’s car park.

Ellson had parked her Peugeot so close to Mr Morgan’s vehicle he couldn’t get in through the driver’s side door.

He said when he complained to Ellson ‘she gave me the middle finger with a smug look on her face.’

He made a similar gesture and said Ellson responded by grabbing his finger and hitting him in the face.

Ellson, of Cross Hands, near Carmarthen, denied dangerous driving but was convicted following a trial.

She claimed Mr Morgan had deliberately jumped on the bonnet in McDonald’s in Cross Hands and refused to get off.

Judge Peter Heywood sentenced Ellson to nine months in prison suspended for 18 months.

She was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Mr Heywood said: ‘A perfectly civil interchange took place but sadly for a host of reasons matters degenerated.

‘You grabbed his finger and then he shouted to his partner: ‘Assault, call the police.’

‘Foolishly you decided to drive off. He said that he was hanging on to the bonnet of your car.

‘This offence I have no doubt was very much out of character.’
