‘I felt excruciating pain, but adrenaline made me fight back.’

Sampson pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder, and in court Mrs Pederson addressed him directly.

‘My will to live, Bill Sampson, was stronger than your ability to kill,’ she said.

Sampson was sentenced to a maximum term of 11 years and three months in prison by Judge Roy Ellis at the Newcastle District Court on Thursday, with a non-parole period of eight years.

The attack was an attempt by Sampson to end their feud which had been running for a year and a half.
