Woman unrecognisable after being bashed at Sydney home

A Sydney woman has been so badly bashed police are having trouble determining her age.

She was attacked in a unit in Campsie about 5am on Thursday by a man wielding a knife and hammer, NSW police said.

A man who was in a relationship with the woman is now in police custody.

Police said her head injuries were so severe the woman is unrecognisable.

The woman has been taken to St George Hospital where she is in a critical but stable condition.

A crime scene has been set up and police are gathering items for forensic testing.

Police are investigating if the incident is a domestic violence related attack.
