A woman who mowed down two tourists leaving one dead after losing control of her BMW has claimed she fell asleep at the wheel.

The unnamed 52-year-old Spaniard was released pending an ongoing criminal probe after appearing before a judge at a court in the Majorcan capital Palma yesterday. She hid her head under a jacket as she was led into court.

A 39-year-old German woman was killed in the horror accident around 4.30pm on Friday on Palma’s seafront promenade and a 33-year-old British man left critically injured.

The pair were part of a group of mainly British tourists who had jetted to the island for a short holiday the day before the accident.

Island newspaper Ultima Hora said today several were doctors who had studied together at Manchester University, quoting one as saying: ‘They called us and told us something terrible had happened and we should go to a hospital called Son Espases.

‘We are in shock, we still can’t believe it.’

A police spokesman said yesterday tests to try to establish the speed she was going at were still ongoing.

She was arrested on suspicion of a crime of causing death and injury by wreckless driving and is expected to face a manslaughter charge at the end of a judicial probe into the incident.

The holidaymakers were trapped under the BMW when it hit them after careering into street signs and a traffic light.

The woman went into cardiac arrest and died at the scene despite attempts by paramedics to save her.

The man suffered serious head injuries and had to be stabilised at the scene.
