One of the most important foundations for any relationship is trust.

But for Elizabeth and her husband, trust and security were getting harder to come by – particularly when she found out he had hired a private investigator to follow her around the city on a work day.

Tom gave off early warning signs of being possessive, but Elizabeth misread these as protective: when he’d phone a lot, show up at her office at lunchtime and ask about male colleagues she was working with.

But for Elizabeth and her husband trust and security was getting harder to come by – particularly when she found out he had hired a private investigator to follow her around the city on a work day (file picture)

‘So I thought that was sweet at the time but his checking up on me started to get more and more intense,’ she told 9Honey.

Getting a coffee with workmates who happened to be men became an ongoing problem, even if Elizabeth talked about them in a general sense over the dinner table.

Slowly but surely she stopped mentioning their names to avoid him throwing an adult-sized tantrum.

Tom made it clear he was an insecure man and asked her to stop hanging out with particular men – but occasionally she needed to for the sake of work.

When she’d lie and tell him she was staying in the office all day – when in fact she’d be moving around the city – he was incredibly angry when he found out she’d lied.

But she couldn’t figure out how he was tracking her movements.

‘This is how I knew my marriage was over – that night I got home and Tom had laid out a series of photos on the table – of me. He confessed he’d hired a private investigator because he knew I was lying about my whereabouts,’ she explained.

‘There were photos of me having a coffee with my male workmate – totally innocent! Photos of me about five kilometres from the CBD when I had lied and said I’d be in the CBD all day. There was even a photo of me shopping for makeup in a department store in my lunchbreak and talking to a male assistant. It was ludicrous.’

The pair separated and Elizabeth only hopes her next partner isn’t as paranoid and jealous.
