National Women’s Soccer League star Savy King was rushed to a local hospital after collapsing on the field during the second half of Angel City’s game against the Utah Royals on Friday night.

King collapsed during the 74th minute at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, with medical professionals getting to her side immediately.

The 20-year-old was worked on for about 10 minutes before she was carted off the field and transported to a local hospital.

Angel City stated early Saturday morning that the defender was ‘responsive’.

‘Savy King Update: Savy was transported by EMS to the hospital following a medical event on the field. She is responsive and undergoing further evaluation. We thank everyone for their concern and support,’ Angel City said in a social-media statement.

After the game, both Angel City and the Royals gathered for a post-match prayer, with Alex Loera, who was teammates with King at Bay FC last season, leading the group.

Royals head coach Jimmy Coenraets said after the match he was unsure it should have continued after King’s injury.

During EURO 2020, Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch, causing the group-stage match against Finland to be stopped for a few hours, with it resuming later in the evening.

‘I think that’s not the right situation or position to be in,’ Coenraets said. ‘I think it was a really tough moment and the same after the game. What do you want to focus on after the game?

‘I think at that point, yes, there is a result, there is a game, but I just want to make sure people feel safe, healthy, good and they can actually move on. I think that was also the focus after the game for us.’

King has been on the radar of US women’s national team coach Emma Hayes this year, being called into January’s futures camp and as a training player before the SheBelieves Cup.
