Woolworths and Big W get rid of a major Christmas ‘staple’ in glitter

Woolworths and Big W get rid of a major Christmas ‘staple’ as they prepare to drop their festive ranges

  • Big W and Woolworths have announced their plans to do Christmas glitter free
  • Both of the companies own brands will be 100 per cent glitter-free from now on
  • Companies are making the change in a bid to be more environmentally friendly
  • Glitter contains microplastics which are extremely damaging to the environment

Big W and Woolworths have announced plans to go glitter-free on their own brand Christmas range this year in a bid to protect the environment.

Glitter is made of microplastics, which are pieces of small plastic that are single-use and non-recyclable and can have an extremely negative impact on the environment, particularly the ocean.

Big W’s Christmas range has already started to land in stores and online, and Woolworths’ range will begin rolling out in early November.

Why ban glitter?

  • Glitter presents a serious dangerous for ocean and marine life
  • It’s made of a microplastic known as Mylar
  • This type of plastic accounts for 92.4 per cent of the 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean
  • Each piece of microplastic can take thousands of years to breakdown
  • Marine life is eating microplastic after mistaking it for food. This is damaging for their liver
  • Scientists started strongly calling for a glitter ban in 2017

As well as their own brand products being glitter free, the entirety of Woolworths range of Christmas general merchandise will also be glitter free.

Both shops will also only be selling bon bons with plastic free prizes inside of them to aid the environment.

‘We want to help create a better tomorrow and this is a small but meaningful way we can help our customers deliver Christmas cheer without the impact glitter has on the environment,’ said Woolworths Group General Manager of Sustainability Transformation and Delivery Liam Ward.

‘We know there’s more we can do and we’re working to reduce glitter across our entire range in Woolworths and Big W.

‘We’re also making changes to reduce plastic in its many other forms, with both Woolworths and Big W removing reusable plastic shopping bags from checkouts nationwide by the end of June next year.’

Big W’s Head of Commercial, Home & Everyday Shane Carter outlined that the shop has removed ’29 tonnes of plastics across Christmas products and packaging since 2019.’
