Woolworths employee working at a packing centre tests positive for coronavirus in Melbourne

An employee at a Woolworths order packing centre in Melbourne has tested positive to coronavirus.

The woman worked at the Customer Fulfilment Centre in West Footscray in inner-west Melbourne and worked four shifts while potentially contagious.

The distribution centre was closed overnight for deep cleaning, impacting online orders scheduled for delivery to Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs.

The female supervisor notified her superiors of her positive diagnosis on Saturday, who in turn informed staff at the centre by Sunday afternoon.

‘As a precautionary measure the Customer Fulfilment Centre received a detailed deep clean overnight on the 4th and 5th July,’ a Woolworths spokeswoman said on Monday.

‘As a result of the additional clean on Sunday night we cancelled online delivery orders out of the West Footscray CFC this morning’.

She had worked four shifts at the centre since June 28, but was unaware she had COVID-19 because she was asymptomatic the entire time.

The distribution centre employs about 800 staff.

On Monday, the Woolworths spokeswoman downplayed any concerns that the food deliveries could have spread the virus and passed it onto customers, despite the centre servicing some of Melbourne’s worst-hit suburbs.

More to come.
