Woolworths supermarkets around Australia are hit by outage of self-service checkout system

Woolworths is currently experiencing an outage across self-serve checkout systems spanning the country.

The supermarket said it is trying to resolve the IT issue, as some customers report long lines at checkouts. 

Customers at the store in Town Hall, Sydney, were allegedly notified of the outage over loudspeaker at around 5pm on Wednesday. 

The Daily Mail Australia spoke to stores in New South Wales and Western Australia who confirmed their self-serve systems were down.

‘We’ve experienced an IT issue at our self-serve checkouts in stores this afternoon,’ a Woolworths spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia. 

‘Stores remain open as we can still process transactions through checkouts operated by our team members and through the self-serve checkouts that are still operational.

‘We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.’ 

Woolworths has said they are working to resolve the IT issue and have apologised to customers 

One social media user told a community Facebook group in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, there were ‘lines for miles’ outside one store. 

‘Don’t go to Woolworths,’ they wrote. 

‘Self serve not working, bugger all register staff lines for miles. Complete [chaos].’ 

Wait times at Caboolture South Woolworths in Moreton Bay, Queensland, is more than 30 minutes long, reported local Facebook page Moreton Alerts.  

‘Please be patient staff don’t need to be abused over this,’ the alert said. 

‘We have been advised that this is a state issue and is also affecting Big W stores as well.’
