Woolworths’ underpayment scandal bill has ballooned to nearly $400million, with as many as 7,000 workers due a payout.

The supermarket chain has identified $315million in underpaid wages, with another $80million expected to be paid as compensation to staff, as well as administration fees. 

Workers are due to be repaid the full amount that they were underpaid, as well as compensation equivalent to 5.5 per cent of their annual salary a year.

However, the total figure could be far greater as the current estimate only covers five years of data of staff payments at Woolworths, Big W, BWA and Dan Murphy’s.

Four more years of time sheets will be analysed. 

Woolworths Group CEO Brad Banducci – who earns a $2.6million-a-year salary – said shareholders had ‘every right to be frustrated and disappointed’.

‘We are working hard to finalise the review and repay impacted team members as soon as possible,’ he said.
