The idea of a Great Dane becoming best friends with a Chihuahua might sound like something from the latest Disney cartoon.

But it has become a reality in Idaho, where the world’s tallest and shortest dogs have met for the very first time.

At just 3.59-inches tall, Pearl, 4, is around the same size as a large teacup.

In stark contrast, Reggie, 7, stands at an impressive 39.6-inches tall – around half the size of a King Size Bed.

Despite their 3ft height difference, the pair got on like a house on fire – and thankfully, Reggie was gentle with this new tiny pal.

Sam Johnson Reiss, Reggie’s owner, said: ‘Obviously, bringing the smallest dog in the world with the tallest dog in the world, there was a little bit of anxiety.

‘But I think he was very gentle [and] very, very kind [to Pearl], as best as he could be.’

Pearl’s owner, Vanesa Semler, added: ‘I think she has no idea she is a small dog!’

While the average Great Dane reaches an impressive 32-inches tall, Reggie stands at 39.6-inches, making him the tallest living dog.

However, even Reggie would looks small next to the tallest dog ever – Zeus, a fellow Great Dane, who measured 1.118 m (3ft 8 in) in 2011!

Meanwhile Pearl measures 9.14 cm (3.59 in) – signifiantly smaller than the average Chihuahua, which reaches 5 to 8 inches tall.

Pearl, who lives in Florida, travelled to Reggie’s home in Idaho for the meet-up, co-ordinated by Guinness World Records.

Speaking ahead of the meet-up, Ms Semler said: ‘When Pearl meets bigger dogs, she is really friendly.

‘Normally she’s really playful with bigger dogs, she just wants to be around [them].’

As the two owners predicted, the dogs got on well – although Reggie made sure to keep his distance.

‘He was trying to be careful around her, so I think that may be the main reason he wanted to stay away because he was really, you know, gentle with her,’ Ms Semler added.

‘That’s an amazing quality. That talks a lot about how caring and loving he is!’

Their meet-up comes shortly after the world’s tallest and shortest women met for afternoon tea in London.

Rumeysa Gelgi, a 27-year-old Turkish web developer, and Indian actress Jyoti Amge bonded during their meeting at The Savoy hotel.

Ms Gelgi joked that it was ‘difficult for us to make eye contact at times’ due to their height difference, but said it was ‘great’ and ‘amazing’ to meet.

Ms Amge, 30, is the shortest woman at 62.8cm (2ft 1in), while Ms Gelgi holds the Guinness World Record (GWR) for being the world’s tallest woman at 215.16cm (7ft 1in).
