An Australian mum has baffled the internet with a seemingly innocent photo of her 14-year-old daughter’s room after it received a ‘makeover’ from Bunnings Warehouse.
The woman, who lives in South Australia, took to Facebook on Monday with photos of the finished product, which showed her daughter’s bed, desk, and storage units.
‘Another fortune spent at Bunnings hopefully finally sorting Miss 14s bedroom for her birthday,’ she wrote. ‘Paint, cubes, and desktop are all from Bunnings.
‘She has two sets of cubes, one behind the other equalling 16 cubes which it was wasted under bed space.’

While she was evidently proud of the design a few commenters decided to point out the safety risks involved in placing the young girl’s mattress on stacking cubes.
‘Don’t wanna be that person but that bed is not safe. They actually have weight liners on those shelves and I can tell you now the mattress alone would cover the weight limit,’ one woman wrote.
‘I would get a normal single bed and add drawers under the bed for storage’
But the mum replied: ‘It has a full wooden frame built-in and attached… the bearers are in the walls, we wouldn’t change safety! Without the cubes there the bed would still be safe.’
Another woman jumped in to defend her but offer a further complaint.
The desk photo did not receive nearly as much commentary as the bed itself did
‘Hubby and I can sit on those cubes fine. They are commonly made into bench seats and the weight is being spread between two units here so it’s even stronger,’ she said.
‘The main worry would be mold and mildew in the mattress because it’s got no ventilation under it.’
But the original poster had a response for that supposed error too.
‘There’s actually about 25cm along the back long side of the bed that’s open and the head end is open where the window is. The mattress also isn’t sitting flush on the cubes, there would be a good 4-5cms between the cubes and the bed base slats so hopefully, that’s enough,’ she replied.
But that didn’t stop even further commenters from pointing out the height may be an issue.
‘That bed doesn’t look safe at all. If she rolls to the right on the edge won’t she tip the whole mattress?’ One woman said.
‘Hope she doesn’t roll off the bed in the middle of the night,’ said another.
A third added: ‘Great idea but are these cube shelves okay to use like this? Will they hold up?’
Bunnings sells a number of cube storage solutions that can be arranged upright or laid down to suit the needs of your space.
