Revealed: Britain’s worst areas for sexually transmitted diseases – with London’s political and financial districts named as biggest hot spots

  • City of London has worst rate of new STI diagnoses with 4,615 per 100,000 
  • Westminster and 13 other London boroughs feature highly on STI league table
  • Outside capital Brighton and Manchester are STI hot spots, according to data 

The City of London and Westminster have the most new STI diagnoses of anywhere in the country, new figures have revealed.

Britain’s political, financial and business are breeding grounds for sexually transmitted infections, according to new Public Health England analysis.

London has by far the worst figures for new cases of infections of anywhere in the country, with the City of London clocking up 4,615 per 100,000 people and Westminster 2,694.

Outside of the capital cities with high numbers of young people also had the most STI cases, with Brighton racking up 1,547 in every 100,000 and Manchester 1,4111.

The data was compiled by the sexual health experts behind the E4 hit show ‘The Sex Clinic’, Better2Know, who crunched official figures from 2018. 

It shows STI cases have shot up five per cent in the last year, with the national average of 8.5 cases for every 1,000 people. 

Fifteen of London’s 32 boroughs are the worst in England for STIs, with the rate for the capital as a whole at 17.1 per 1,000.     

Students are among the biggest suspects, with the nations largest university cities, such as Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol and Newcastle all featuring in the top 20,

Demand for home test kits were also shown to have surged 48 per cent in the weeks following summer festivals popular with students. 

For example there was a 22 per cent hike in positive results in the weeks following Glastonbury in 2017.

But the region of England outside London with the highest proportion of new STI diagnoses is the North West, followed by the South East, West Midlands and the South West region.

The East Midlands and East of England have the lowest overall proportion of new STI diagnoses compared to other regions, the data shows

Anthea Morris, Co-founder at Better2Know said of the findings: ‘Our analysis shows that cities and metropolitan areas tend to have higher proportions of positive STI tests results than rural areas, with hotspots around London, Hampshire and the North East of England. 

‘However, we were surprised to discover that political and financial centres such as Westminster and the City of London have some of the highest STI rates in the country, way surpassing even other large metropolitan areas and popular university towns such Birmingham, Manchester and Southampton.’
