- Retired U.S. Army Capt. Sam Brown is launching a Senate bid in Nevada

- He ran for Senate in 2022 but lost the GOP primary to Adam Laxalt
Sam Brown, a retired Army captain who was wounded by an IED in Afghanistan, announced Monday that he will run for Senate in Nevada as a Republican against Democratic incumbent Sen. Jacky Rosen.
Brown had tried to secure the Republican nomination for Senate in 2022, but fell short to the Trump-endorsed choice of Adam Laxalt, who comes from political royalty in Nevada.
Laxalt would go on to lose his November election to incument Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, in what was a disappointing showing in the midterms for the GOP.
Now Brown is making a run at the Senate again – in what will be one of the most closely watched races of the 2024 cycle.
‘The cat is out of the bag – In the military, no one asks you what party you’re in. They just want to know that they can count on you to fight alongside them. I’m ready to lead and fight for Nevadans again,’ Brown tweeted Monday.

Sam Brown announced Monday he would compete in the Republican primary for the Nevada Senate seat, in an effort to unseat Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen
While Democrats currently hold a one-seat majority in the Senate, 21 in their ranks are up for reelection, versus just 11 for Republicans.
And eight of those seats are considered vulnerable.
Republicans, on the other hand, have no incumbents in hot water.
Three Democrats have to run for reelection in states former President Donald Trump won in 2020 – Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Jon Tester of Montana.
Democrats are trying to hold onto Senate seats in five presidential swing states as well.
There’s Rosen’s race in Nevada, as well as Sen. Bob Casey’s in Pennsylvania, Tammy Baldwin’s in Wisconsin, Kyrsten Sinema – an independent who caucuses with the Democrats – in Arizona, and there’s an open Senate seat in Michigan, due to the retirement of Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow.
Brown will make his run official Monday afternoon with an appearance in Reno.
Nevada’s incumbent Sen. Jacky Rosen is among the eight Senate Democrats who face challenging reelection bids in 2024
He’s the fourth Republican to enter the race.
Brown is following former state Assemblyman Jim Marchant – a 2020 election denier who lost his 2022 bid to become Nevada’s secretary of state – real estate broker Stephanie Phillips and civil rights attorny Ronda Kennedy.
Laxalt is not expected to jump in the race – as he’s helping run the pro-Ron DeSantis super PAC, Never Back Down.
Before his 2022 Senate run, Brown previously lost a state legislature race in Texas in 2014, before relocating to Nevada in 2018.
