Wrexham reveal there was NO structural damage to their stadium after rain poured in while fans enjoyed a Father’s Day lunch – in huge relief for Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney

  • Guests had sat down for the £24.95, three-course meal at Wrexham’s stadium
  • But heavy rain caused a leak in the roof, leading to a nasty shock for diners
  • Club stated that all repairs would be completed long before start of the season

Wrexham have reported that there has been no structural damage to the club’s Racecourse Ground after a stand had to be evacuated when rainwater started pouring through the roof as diners enjoyed a Father’s Day meal.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms struck the Welsh city on June 18, leaving a number of roads in the area flooded and impassable.

There was concern within the club that the storms might have damaged the Macron Stand, where people were sitting down to the £24.95-a-head meal in the 1864 Suite when interrupted by the deluge.

Footage on social media showed water coming through the ceiling as guests made their way out of the building.

But a club statement shared a positive update on Thursday, which suggested no lasting damage to the stand itself.

It read: ‘We are pleased to confirm that, following investigation into the large leak in the Macron Stand on Sunday (June 18), there is no structural damage to the stand.

‘In the wake of the torrential rain that impacted the whole region on the day, the underground drains became overwhelmed which led to our downpipes and gutters to overflow. This led to a significant amount of water leaked into the Stand causing a suspended ceiling to collapse and damage to the internal decorations.

‘Guests attending the third sitting of our Father’s Day meal in the 1864 Suite were safely escorted out of the building, as a precaution, in case the situation worsened and will be refunded in full.

‘All the repairs will be carried out and completed long before fans are welcomed back into the Racecourse Ground for the new season.’

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they were called out to 13 reports of flash-flooding in the Wrexham area early on Sunday evening.

Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will be delighted that additional work on the stand will not be added unexpectedly to the renovations already underway at the ground.

The stadium – which will be known as The SToK Cae Ras, or Racecourse Ground, from July 1 after the sale of its naming rights – is in the process of undergoing an £18million revamp of its matchday facilities.

Earlier this month, Wrexham announced American airline United would be their new front-shirt sponsor for the upcoming League Two season.

They won the National League title with 111 points and 116 goals following an epic tussle with Notts County, who were also promoted after the play-offs.

It means they will play in the EFL for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
