Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney got the full traveling fan experience on Monday for his side’s huge 2-1 win over Blackpool as the Welsh side took a huge step towards promotion to the Championship.

The Red Dragons are looking to seal back-to-back-to-back promotions in an unprecedented move that could take them up to the Championship in their pursuit of reaching the Premier League.

Under Phil Parkinson they have stormed their way up the Football League after finally ending their spell out in the National League, and Monday’s result was a pivotal one indeed.

With Wycombe also suffering a shock defeat by Charlton, Wrexham leapfrogged the Chairboys into second and the automatic promotion places.

With two games to go, the Welsh outfit now have a two-point advantage on their rivals, and their destiny is firmly now back in their own hands.

Their trip to the west Lancashire coast saw McElhenney in the away end for his side’s big game, though he was without his partner Ryan Reynolds.

The It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia actor was filmed singing with the Wrexham supporters, soaking up the atmosphere on a massive day for their relegation hopes.

The Hollywood star was also pictured meeting fans before the game as he made his way to his spot in the stands.

After a goalless first half, Wrexham needed over an hour to make the breakthrough against the midtable Tangerines.

But two goals in three minutes from James McClean and Ollie Rathbone gave the visitors the advantage, with a 95th-minute consolation from the hosts not enough to derail Wrexham.

Boss Parkinson was quick to thank the travelling support for their energy in the stands after the game.

‘I want more of the same on Saturday,’ he said. ‘We need everyone in that ground to get that place bouncing.

The promotion-chasers now turn their attentions to Charlton – who just beat Wycombe 4-0 – in their first of two huge tests of their promotion credentials.

Currently in fourth, the Latics could put themselves in the automatic promotion places with a win, if Wycombe draw or lose their game, in an incredible tense run-in for all sides involved.
