The writer of Netflix hit A Christmas Prince has revealed she was inspired to create the film after visiting Prince William and Kate Middleton’s home in Anglesey.

LA-based Karen Schaler’s script sees an American journalist come under pressure to dig up dirt on a prince before the pair eventually fall in love.

She said she was inspired by having visited the Welsh island as a reporter herself, and found she had ‘so much respect’ for locals who were highly protective of the Cambridges’ life there.

William and Kate lived in North Wales from 2010 to 2013 while he served at RAF Valley as a helicopter pilot.

Speaking to The Telegraph, she said wanted the story to have a message, saying: ‘I thought, “Of course we’re writing a Christmas movie and it’s fun and light.

‘But if I could just get that little message in there that let’s look at people for who they are, no matter what their bloodline is”.’

The writer of the Netflix hit ‘The Christmas Prince’ suggested that Prince William, 37, and Kate Middleton, 37, inspired the film

After the hit success of the first Christmas Prince film, there have since been two follow-ups, with the third released earlier this month.

A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby follows the story of former New York journalist Queen Amber (Rose McIver) and her European husband, the king of fictional Aldovia, Richard (Ben Lamb), preparing to welcome their firstborn in the film’s third annual installment.

The festive rom-com tells the story of the couple, an American journalist and a European royal, much like LA-born former actress Meghan and British Prince Harry.

The pair, who married in the second film, reveal they are keen to keep their firstborn’s life as ‘normal’ as possible – similar to Meghan and Harry, who opted against giving Archie a royal title when he was born in May.

Karen suggested the hit film was actually inspired by a trip to Anglesey, where she found locals were highly protective of The Cambridges, who lived on the island from 2011 to 2013

But Karen, who didn’t write the second two films in the triology, has suggested the original was actually inspired by other royals, including Princess Diana, Prince William and Kate Middleton.

She said she meticulously studied other festive TV films, noting when the characters would meet and when each advert break would come.

She also said she learned the necessity of certain plot points, including a ‘near-miss kiss’ and an ‘all is lost’ moment.

The writer added that the film provides a ‘great sense’ of escapism for people at Christmas.
