  • Yassmin Abdel-Magied spoke out about US immigration scandal on Twitter
  • She wrote that Australia has no moral high ground in the US immigration debate
  • She makes direct reference to Manus Island and Nauru in her tweet

Controversial Muslim activist Yassmin Abdel-Magied has spoken out about her views on Manus Island again, this time saying it is just as bad as the treatment of immigrants trying to enter the US.

Sudanese-born Abdel-Magied said Australia could not take the moral high ground as migrant children are split from their families at the US-Mexico border.

‘The worst thing about seeing this stuff go down in the US is knowing Aus is in no position to be morally superior given our record on Manus, Nauru and… I guess since invasion,’ she wrote on Twitter.

Miss Abdel-Magied’s comments are in reference to the children of illegal immigrants caught at the border being separated from their adult parents as they await trial.

On Monday the United Nations human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said the actions of the federal government were ‘unconscionable’.

‘The thought that any state would seek to deter parents by inflicting such abuse on children is unconscionable,’ he said.

‘I call on the United States to immediately end the practice of forcible separation of these children.’

Children are unable to be taken to the same facilities as their parents after being detained, they are forced to be separated which has caused outrage

Global outrage was sparked after word spread that Trump’s administration would have a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to those caught trying to cross the border into the United states illegally.

In a six week period nearly 2,000 minors were separated from their parents or adult guardians.

Because children are unable to be taken to the same facilities as their parents after being detained, they are forced to be separated.

At this stage the United States is the only country not to have ratified the UN’s Convention of the Rights of the Child, something Mr Raád Al Hussein has implored the government to do.

Miss Abdel-Magied’s tweet garnered more than 200 re-tweets.
