York doctor killed in crash by suspected drug-driver

A talented young doctor described by his girlfriend as ‘the most wonderful human being I have ever met’ was killed in a motorbike crash with a suspected drug-driver.

Dr Alex Boorman, 27, died after his bike collided with a car on the A19 Easingwold bypass in North Yorkshire on December 7.

The 22-year-old driver of the car has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs.

After Dr Alex Boorman (pictured)’s death last week, his girlfriend Alex Bellard, 27, said: ‘My world is broken. He made my life complete and I can’t even comprehend a future without him. ‘He was the most wonderful human being I have ever met.’

He escaped with minor injuries and has been released under investigation.

Dr Boorman, of Thirsk, North Yorkshire, completed his medical training at the University of Edinburgh before getting a job at York Hospital.

Friends, colleagues and family have paid tribute to him and described his death as a ‘waste of a life’.

His girlfriend Alex Bellard, 27, said: ‘My world is broken. He made my life complete and I can’t even comprehend a future without him.

‘He was the most wonderful human being I have ever met.’

Miss Bellard, who works as a teacher, added: ‘I will always, always love you AJ Boorman.’  

The 27-year-old was also a keen sportsman and played for Richmondshire Rugby Union Football Club’s second team.

A post on the club’s Facebook page read: ‘Today we paid tribute to a valued 2nd team player, who has only been part of our club for a short time but made a huge impact on and off the pitch to us all.

‘Such a waste of life. A great young man with a bright future as a doctor ahead of him. He will be greatly missed. The club send our condolences to his family. RIP AJ.’

Dozens of comments from fellow rugby players and nearby teams followed, some with pictures of a pint of beer as a tribute to him.  

The two passengers in the car were a 22-year-old who was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by air ambulance and a 17-year-old woman who was taken to York Hospital by road ambulance.

Both had serious but non life-threatening injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the crash should call police on 101, quoting reference 12170219180.
