A cinema worker has confirmed that audience members are allowed to bring their own snacks into films – busting a common myth that they are banned.

British employee Ryan Barratt, who is believed to live in York, revealed how his boss had clarified the rule shortly after he started in his new role. 

He shared the ‘life-changing’ revelation in a Twitter post that shocked thousands of users.

Ryan wrote: ‘Got a new job at a cinema and it’s changed my life, asked my boss “what if we see someone taking their own food in” and she said “Ryan, it’s a myth, people can bring their own food in here” my life has been a lie.’

He later clarified that hot food and alcohol are not allowed.  

Dozens replied to say that they had also been ‘living a lie’ and shared stories of how they had gone to great lengths to smuggle snacks into the cinema.

One wrote: ‘We don’t have to hide it anymore! Couldnt believe it, I’ve been sneaking food in in my backpack. Unbelievable.’

Another added: ‘Wow the times I’ve worn big coats to conceal food and drink into the cinema, what a fool I must’ve looked, well it was in the middle of summer.’

The latest figures from the UK Cinema Association show the average ticket price in the UK is £7.49.

It does not publish figures for the average cost of snacks but the Daily Record suggests it is roughly £8 for popcorn and a drink. 

Instead many choose to buy their snacks elsewhere and bring them into the cinema. 

Information on the UK Cinema Association states ‘most cinemas prefer that customers do not bring in their own food and drink.’

Cineworld,Vue and Odean cinema chains all state online that there that is has a strict ‘no hot food or alcohol policy’.
