You cannot be serious!: Wimbledon are to serve a vegan version of its famous strawberries and cream

Wimbledon will be serving up a vegan version of its strawberries and cream this year.

Vegan cream, ice cream and sorbet are now available at the All England Club throughout the two-week Championships.

The move was welcomed by animal rights activists at Peta.

Director of vegan projects Dawn Carr said: ‘Peta first urged Wimbledon to offer strawberries and vegan cream in 2017, and we’re delighted to make a racquet about the new cruelty-free treat.

Vegan cream is not only packed with flavour and kinder to animals and the environment but also a healthier alternative for tennis fans to enjoy in the heat.’

Regular cream and ice cream will also be available across the venue.

A few years ago Peta handed out strawberries and vegan cream to tennis fans outside Wimbledon with its corporate outreach team also calling on the club to get involved.

It is estimated that around 27 tons of strawberries along with 7,000 litres of cream are consumed by tennis fans during the tournament.

The new vegan additions to the menu won’t be the only animal-friendly changes.

Some players including defending champion Angelique Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki will be wearing high-tech vegan kit made with recycled plastic and designed especially for Wimbledon by Stella McCartney.
