A young boy bitten on the face by a white dog in a Sydney street has suffered facial injuries. 

A family member called an ambulance from an address on Dowding Street in Panania, while the man and the dog walked away from the scene.

The boy was taken to Bankstown Hospital for treatment.

Police are now appealing for witnesses following the attack after the owner of the animal was unable to be located when emergency services arrived.

It is understood the boy approached a man, who was holding the dog on a leash.

Bankstown police would like to speak with a man they believe can assist with inquiries. 

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 180cm to 185cm tall with short black hair and wearing a white shirt.
