A young model is supporting her catwalk career by moonlighting as a firefighter. 

Julia Newbery, 23, came runner up in the Miss Teen Australia 2011 competition. 

Since then, she has featured in TV commercials and music videos and shot campaigns for brands including Hotels.com, La Bride, D’Makeup Station and Hair and Beauty.

But when she’s not in front of the cameras, Newbery is taking care of the good people of Otford, New South Wales where she works for the rural fire brigade.

The brunette beauty was on duty last week to put out wildfires which threatened south-west Sydney. 

‘I helped put the fires out and then we got the rake hoes and cleared a path for everyone to get through,’ she told The Daily Telegraph. 

Newbery said that her colleagues support her modelling career, adding: ‘They think it’s funny that I can look so girlie and when there’s a fire I can be covered in soot.’

‘When you’re battling a fire, how you look is the last thing on your mind.’

The model joined her local brigade three years ago because she ‘looked up to’ the fireys that help keep Australians safe.
