Yumi Stynes: Police apply for AVO against her ex-husband Martin Bendeler after she feared for safety

A complaint by TV and radio presenter Yumi Stynes about the alleged behaviour of her ex-husband causing her to fear for her safety has led police to apply for an AVO against him.

Stynes announced her separation from her second husband, Martin Bendeler, after nine years of marriage in October of last year.

The former Channel [V] host married Bendeler in 2012 and they share two children, daughter Mercy and a son whose name has never been publicly revealed.

NSW Police applied to the Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday to make an order to restrain Bendeler’s alleged behaviour, with the court application including Stynes’ claim it had led her to fear for her safety.

An interim AVO containing standard conditions was granted ahead of a court case on January 11 where it will be decided if the AVO will be made permanent.

It’s understood the former couple were trying to co-parent their two children until Stynes, who co-hosts a radio show on KIIS FM, made the complaint to police.

Under the conditions of the AVO, Bendeler can not stalk, assault or threaten Ms Stynes or intentionally destroy property or harm animals that belong to her.

He has not been accused of doing any of these things and was not in court when the interim order was approved on Tuesday.

Stynes broke down in tears live on KIIS FM’s 3pm Pick-Up in late October of 2021 as she shared heartbreaking details of the split.

She said she had moved out of the marital home and into her own apartment and told her co-hosts it was daunting being a single mother for the second time.

‘I’m going through a separation at the moment and there’s kids involved and my ex is involved so I don’t want to say anything that hurts these people,’ she said.

‘I have had to find an apartment, had to move my stuff, all my crap is in boxes and bags… I had to change my address, throw out the keys that don’t work anymore…

‘It’s been a lot. I spent the weekend moving and I feel like I’m starting my new life now as a single mum. Here I am again.’

Stynes said she wasn’t ready to tell the full story of the split, but expects she will still be processing her grief for another year.

‘I have hundreds and thousands of words to say but I don’t think I’m ready yet,’ she told listeners.

‘Break-ups aren’t over quickly. I’ll probably be in this process for another year… I probably will be up and down in the future.’

Stynes and Bendeler wed in 2012, after she proposed to him on February 29, which as a leap day is traditionally the day women propose marriage to men.

She was previously married to Ben Ely from Australian rock band Regurgitator from 2000 to 2008. They share two older children; Anouk and Dee Dee.

Stynes wrote an article for the ABC in 2020 about how to stay friends with an ex-partner based on her experience co-parenting with Ely.

She encouraged people to ‘take time apart when it first happens, encourage mutual respect and redraw the boundaries of your relationship’.

‘Breaking up ‘well’ isn’t something you think about when you’re in the flush of new love,’ she wrote.

‘And when it all falls apart, staying friendly isn’t necessary – unless you share something vital, like a business, friends, a creative project or, in our case, children.’
