Zendaya auditioned ‘many times’ for role in 2015 television movie Descendants, former Disney Channel exec reveals on podcast

Zendaya auditioned multiple times for the 2015 Disney Channel movie Descendants that centers around the teenage children of classic Disney villains.

The 27-year-old actress tried hard to land a role in the original TV movie, said former Disney Channel vice president of casting and talent relations Cornelia Frame in an article on Tuesday by Deadline.

‘Zendaya did audition many times for Descendants, and that was a big deal,’ Frame said during a recent interview on the Magical Rewind podcast.

‘It was a really big deal. She auditioned over and over and really wanted it. It just ended up not going her way,’ Frame added.

She continued: ‘Now that I think about it, I’m like, ”Would Spider-Man have happened right at that same time?” Things happen for a reason, and you do often book this other thing that’s amazing when you don’t get something else.’

Zendaya ‘put so much effort and so much work into, it, too. It’s just one of those things,’ Frame said.

The musical fantasy TV movie Descendants premiered in 2015 on the Disney Channel and centered on the children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar and Cruella de Vil.

Zendaya at the time of its premiere was starring in the Disney Channel series K.C. Undercover and went on to star in an additional two seasons of the spy comedy.

Descendants starred Dove Cameron as Mal, the daughter of Maleficent; the late Cameron Boyce as Carlos, the son of Cruella de Vil; Booboo Stewart as Jay, son of Jafar and Sofia Carson as Evie, the daughter of Evil Queen.

The Disney Channel movie debuted in July 2015 to positive reviews and 6.6 million viewers.

It was followed by a sequel Descendants 2 in July 2017 and a third film Descendants 3 that premiered in August 2019.

The animated short-form series Descendants: Wicked World also was developed as part of the franchise.

A spin-off film titled Descendants: The Rise of Red was released earlier this month on the Disney+ streaming service and is scheduled to debut on Disney Channel on August 9.
