Zenit St Petersburg have brutally mocked Barcelona ahead of the LaLiga side’s arrival in the Europa League this week.

The Catalans are making their first appearance in Europe’s second-tier competition since the 2003-04 campaign, having been dumped out of the Champions League group stage this term.

It represents a big fall from grace for the club, having perennially been considered among the favourites to win the Champions League over the past two decades.

Xavi’s side are now among the favourites to win the Europa League come May, but face strong competition including Napoli, who they face in the play-off for a place in the last-16.

And Russian side Zenit have taken aim at Barcelona, posting a video on TikTok mocking their rivals for falling from the Champions League to the Europa League.

In the clip, a man looks delighted as the iconic Champions League anthem plays out, with his body overlayed by the Barcelona badge.

Then, another person enters the room giving a disapproving look, with the Zenit St Petersburg badge overlayed.

The camera pans back to the first man, who is now playing the Europa League anthem. The Russian club posted the video alongside the wink emoji. They take on Spanish side Real Betis this week.

Barcelona legend Xavi has been tasked with turning the tide at the club, having taken over from Ronald Koeman earlier this season after a terrible start to the campaign.

The Spaniard has lifted his side to fourth in LaLiga, but fumed at Barcelona’s new status as a Europa League club following their elimination in December.

‘I’m p***** off. This is our reality and it p***** me off,’ he said. ‘But we have to face it. There’s no other way.

‘Today a new stage begins and we start from scratch. Our goal is the Champions League, not the Europa League.

‘We have to work hard. I don’t like the word failure, because we have tried. I love this club and I will give my life to make it work.’
