High rise emergency in Sydney as car explodes in apartment building basement sparking mass evacuations

Dozens of residents have been evacuated from a high-rise apartment building in inner Sydney after a car exploded into flames in the basement. 

The car fire occurred in Zetland, in Sydney’s inner east on Friday morning.

Fire and Rescue NSW tweeted: ‘Car on fire in an underground carpark of a high rise apartment building on Ebsworth Street.’ 

FRNSW said 70 residents were evacuated.

NSW Police said the fire has since been extinguished and that no injuries have been reported. 

Emergency services remain at the scene.
