Baby elephant makes public appearance in Budapest Zoo

  • Baby born to parents Angele and Assam in Budapest zoo as sister Asha looked on
  • The elephant enclosure is closed as the family get to know their new member
  • Asha wants to play with baby brother but mum intervenes when she’s too eager
  • Budapest has been breeding the now endangered Asian elephants since 1875

A new born baby Asian elephant has taken its first tentative steps under the watchful eye of his mother.

The as yet unnamed elephant was born to mother Angele in Budapest Zoo at 4am with big sister Asha also present at the birth, as would happen in the wild.

Four-year-old Asha wants to make friends with her new sibling but when she gets a bit too eager, gets pushed away by mum.

The elephant house at the zoo has been closed while the family get some peace and quiet with only vets and caretakers allowed in, local website welovebudapest reported.

Angele is 16-years-old and from La Palmyre zoo in France, while dad Assam was born in captivity at Chester Zoo in 2000, and both are parents to Asha.

Budapest Zoo has been keeping elephants since 1875 and has successfully bred six Asian elephants in its history but the public will have to wait a few days before they can see its latest addition.

Asian elephants are now an endangered species and zoos are taking an active role in breeding them.
